Hakha is a sprawling city clinging precariously along a series of rocky hills. Spend time meandering the streets and absorbing its unique culture.
Visit Mahaganyan Monastery, a monastery university housing thousands of monks. Each morning tourists gather here to watch the ‘thousand monks’ meal. It’s spectacular. There’s also a small market selling chin traditional clothes and bags.
1. Zwe Guest House
Zwe Guest House is an affordable, friendly and centrally located guesthouse. It’s close to the high way bus station and has nice rooms with a balcony overlooking the rice fields. The staff are also very helpful and speak good English. They can organise transport for you and there is a tea shop closed to the guesthouse (Yangon Teashop) that sells good tea and fried rice for a cheap price.
There is a daily bus from Falam to Hakha (1pm, 3,000 kyats/person) as well as a mini van which takes a bit longer. It’s also possible to go there by train, though this is a more difficult and time consuming option.
Located in the heart of Hakha, this stylish hotel offers a variety of room types to suit any traveler’s needs. A variety of top-rated amenities are available for guests, including complimentary wireless internet access and an outdoor pool. There’s no shortage of things to do, from enjoying the stunning scenery to relaxing in the spa.
2. Yangon Teashop
A traditional tea shop reimagined for a globe-trotting crowd, this airy space is located up a flight of stairs inside an old colonial-era building. Black-and-white vintage films flicker on one wall and guests can enjoy an excellent version of mohinga—a savory stew of rice noodles and fish—as well as curries, salads, and traditional tea, coffee, cocktails, wine, and craft beers. The food is quite reasonably priced and the waiters are all smartly dressed and clean.
This teashop follows Chinese style as it offers a large variety of snacks with the tea like steamed buns, baked cakes, noodles, and pastries. In fact, it’s a custom in Myanmar to have a snack with the tea. It also has a colorful history, as it was close to Yangon University during the 1988 student protests and students hid here from police and soldiers.
The village of In Paw Khon is a stop on most sightseeing tours and is home to a vibrant weaving community. If you want to explore the village of In Paw Khon, it’s best to go on foot as the roads are quite rough. Alternatively, you can hire a motorbike for the day, which will cost around US$10. The village is around 20 minutes away from Zwe Guest House and about 30 minutes from the central temple roundabout.
